A recent advancement of in breast reconstruction is the use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) to support the implant internally underneath the mastectomy skin. The ADM is sutured to the chestwall and to the pectoralis muscle which provide coverage for the implant and act as an internal bra to maintain the position of the reconstructed breast.
The most common ADM used in breast reconstruction is Strattice - (Lifecell corp). It was introduced to Europe in 2009 and Mr. Ho-Asjoe has accumulated one of the highest numbers of cases in Europe. It provides a far superior cosmetic result than simple implant reconstruction and requires less expansion than normal. In Mr. Ho-Asjoe opinion, the availability of Strattice has transform his practice as more reconstruction can be performed without having to have scar elsewhere in the body while maintaining a good cosmetic result.
